The Austin History Center’s iconic 1933 building is about to shine brighter than ever—literally. We’re restoring three historic light fixtures: one pendant lamp in the loggia entryway and two exterior sconces on the east facade. These fixtures, designed as part of the building’s original Art Deco architecture, are more than just lights—they’re symbols of our city’s history. In 2024, the “Illuminate Austin” Campaign raised $2000 toward restoration of these historic fixtures, leaving nearly $9,500 left to raise as of February 6th, 2025.

Over time, wear and missing elements, like the sconce bases, have dimmed their brilliance. But thanks to original drawings and the expertise of Les Marling from Tipler’s Lamp Shop, these fixtures will be restored to their former glory. This includes rewiring, cleaning, and the reproduction of lost elements. Once complete, these lights will not only illuminate the building but also connect us to Austin’s past.

Why Your Support Matters

The total cost of this restoration is $11,500, and we need your help to bring these fixtures back to life. While part of a larger $19 million capital improvement project, cost overruns mean this specific work relies on community support.

Your donation will go directly toward preserving these historic fixtures, ensuring the Austin History Center shines as a symbol of our city’s pride and heritage for decades to come.

Be A Part of This Historic Moment

By supporting this restoration, you’ll help us achieve more than just a repair—you’ll light up a piece of Austin’s history. As a thank-you, donors will be invited to an exclusive event, Light Up the AHC, featuring the restoration expert, Les Marling. This celebration will highlight the restoration process and the exciting future plans for the History Center, including its expansion into the John H. Faulk Building.
