The Austin History Center Association (AHCA) has entered into a transformational agreement with the City of Austin, positioning AHCA as a driving force in the future of historical preservation. This public-private partnership establishes a framework for a major expansion of the Austin History Center (AHC) and the John Henry Faulk Library (JHFL), creating a world-class historical and research campus.

Key Highlights of the Agreement

A Bold Vision for Expansion

AHCA will lead the development of a Vision Plan integrating AHC and JHFL to increase capacity for exhibits, community programming, and public access.

AHCA’s Direct Role in Architectural Planning

Unlike many nonprofit partners, AHCA has a direct role in shaping the campus design, managing an architecture firm (Steinberg Hart Architects) to develop the Vision Plan.

Long-Term Leadership Commitment

The agreement is structured as a five-year partnership with automatic five-year extensions, securing AHCA’s long-term leadership in fundraising, development, and program growth.

A Dedicated Funding Stream for AHC

AHCA has committed to an annual contribution of $10,000 to support the Austin Public Library (APL) and AHC, in addition to managing restricted funds for the expansion.

Enhancing Public Access and Engagement

AHCA will help curate exhibits, coordinate oral history projects, and expand archival donations, deepening its role in documenting Austin’s history.

Exclusive Access to City Facilities

The agreement grants AHCA dedicated office space, meeting rooms, and storage within city-owned properties, reinforcing its role as a permanent partner in historical preservation.

A Unified Approach to Fundraising and Grant Management

AHCA has the authority to apply for grants and solicit private donations for AHC projects, ensuring sustainable funding for the expansion.

Commitment to Community Inclusion

The Vision Plan emphasizes diversity, accessibility, and deeper partnerships with Austin Independent School District (AISD) and other educational institutions.

A Seat at the Table in City Planning

AHCA will be notified of capital improvement projects and bond proposals affecting AHC, ensuring its role in shaping future city developments.

Why This Matters

This agreement goes beyond supporting AHC—it elevates AHCA into a leadership role in preserving Austin’s history. By securing a seat in city planning, fundraising, and architectural design, AHCA is turning vision into reality, making Austin’s history more accessible, engaging, and inclusive.

This isn’t just about preserving the past—it’s about ensuring future generations can connect with it.
